“Hooked on Scouting” Fishing Derby in San Ramon
At scenic Annabel Lake next to the Roundhouse in San Ramon, Meridian District hosted an amazing Fishing Derby which saw over 600 Cub Scouts and their buddies along with their moms, dads, aunts, uncles, and grandparents gathered for an evening filled with fishing, outdoor adventure, family activities, and hands-on experiences showcasing the excitement and lifelong benefits of Scouting.
Meridian District serves the communities of Alamo, Blackhawk, Danville, Diablo and San Ramon as one of the fourteen districts that make up the Golden Gate Area Council, Scouting America. The Fishing Derby became one of the largest Scouting outreach and family fishing events in the Bay Area this spring. Event organizers estimate that more than 150 of the youth who attended expressed interest in joining Scouting America programs, demonstrating the growing demand for outdoor youth activities, leadership development programs, and family-focused adventures throughout Northern California.

The “Hooked on Scouting” Fishing Derby introduced families to Cub Scouts and Scouts BSA programs through an engaging evening of outdoor recreation and community connection. Youth participants enjoyed fishing at Annabel Lake while older Scouts demonstrated canoeing skills and outdoor leadership abilities. Families attending the event also had the opportunity to:
- Learn about Cub Scout Packs and Scouts BSA Troops serving the San Ramon Valley
- Explore local youth programs focused on leadership, character, and outdoor adventure
- Meet experienced Scouting volunteers and community leaders
- Discover summer camp, camping, hiking, and outdoor opportunities available through Scouting America
Representatives from the Meridian District shared.
“This event was all about creating meaningful outdoor experiences for families while introducing young people to the adventure and opportunities available through Scouting.” and
“The turnout, enthusiasm, and community support exceeded expectations. We are excited to welcome so many new families interested in becoming part of Scouting America.

The success of the Fishing Derby was made possible through the generous support of Sunset Development and other community sponsors and partners committed to youth development and outdoor education throughout the Bay Area including:
| Brookfield | CBG | ENGEO | Surplus Line Association of California |
Their support helped provide a memorable evening focused on family engagement, outdoor recreation, leadership development, and introducing youth to positive community-based programs.
