Top 7 Scout Hikes in San Francisco

Kid‑Friendly Urban Hiking Adventures in the City by the Bay
Golden Gate Area Council – Scouting America

We are lucky to live in one of the most beautiful places in the world — the San Francisco Bay Area. Outdoor adventure is part of the DNA of Northern California. Within just a short drive (or even a short walk), families can experience waterfalls, rivers, lakes, mountain peaks, forests, and sweeping coastal views.

For Scouts and families living in or visiting San Francisco, the city offers something special: urban hiking. These trails allow youth to explore nature, build outdoor skills, and practice the values of the Scout Oath and Law while staying close to home.

Route #1: North Beach Urban Adventure

A fun urban hike exploring the Filbert Steps, Coit Tower, and hidden stairways. Great views of the San Francisco Bay make this a favorite introduction to city hiking.

Route #2: Presidio Trails

The Presidio offers coastal trails, forests, and Golden Gate Bridge views. Popular loops include the Ecology Trail and Batteries to Bluffs Trail.

Route #3: Mount Sutro to Twin Peaks

A forested hike through Mount Sutro Open Space leading to the iconic Twin Peaks overlook with panoramic views of San Francisco.

Routes #4–6: The Geocaching Series

These hikes turn the trail into a treasure hunt. Scouts use GPS or smartphones to locate hidden geocaches, building navigation and teamwork skills.

Route #7: San Bruno Mountain

Just south of San Francisco, this park features wide beginner-friendly trails, rolling grasslands, and stunning Bay Area views—perfect for Cub Scouts.

Scout Hiking Essentials

Before heading out, Scouts should always carry the Essential 6: water, trail food, sun protection, a flashlight, a whistle, and a small first aid kit.
